Fafanda, CALIFORNIA - Without fanfare earlier, Facebook officially has acquired location-based social networking service Gowalla. During this Gowalla, known as the closest competitor of Foursquare.
The news was obtained by one of CNN's sources at the company, who said Facebook has bought Gowalla an amount not mentioned in number.
Launched by Web Pro News, Saturday (03/12/2011), after this acquisition process Gowalla team, including founder Josh Williams, will move from their headquarters in Austin, Texas, to the Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California. The first job of the team this Gowalla mentioned is developing a Facebook timeline feature, which is currently being rolled out to Facebook members.
"It's like the perfect match for Gowalla," said the source told CNN.
"It's like combining two big picture, vision Gowalla Adala about people share their stories with the location, and the vision of Facebook in the timeline are stories about important moments in life," he added.
Nevertheless, it is still not clear whether Gowalla service will remain active or not, because as we know Facebook also has a kind of location-based service called Facebook Places.
